From Passion to Page–a poetry workshop

In this fun, engaging workshop, you’ll learn how to take poetic inspiration from anywhere and create intense, well-crafted pieces. Using prompts drawn from successful Indian poets who write in English, we will look at what makes a poem work from the inside out. We’ll allow these masterful examples to inspire rather than intimidate us, and you’ll leave the workshop with at least four new poems-in-progress. You can also choose to have your workshop poems considered for publication on the website of The (Great) Indian Poetry Collective, publishing innovative and diverse new poetry from India. Who knows — you could write the next great Indian poem!

How do you see the day unfolding? What will the workshop be like?

We will look at a selection of poems by Indian poets and use them as jumping-off points for our own writing experiments. We’ll talk about what each poem does well and how it accomplishes its magic, and then try our own inspired versions. We’ll play with key poetic concepts such as metaphor, repetition, imagery, and sense of place, all situated in the context of contemporary Indian poets writing in English.

The workshop will begin promptly at 11am and end at 3pm, with a break for lunch and conversation. Please come a little early! Allow yourself about 10 minutes to settle in.

Will I be required to share my writing? Will it be critiqued?

You will have opportunities to share your fresh, new writing with fellow students, but you can always say “pass” if you prefer not to share.  Since all of the work is new, there will be no critique. This workshop is not for critiquing existing work.

Can I pay on the day of the event? By when can I cancel?

Payment is required to confirm your place in the workshop; an RSVP alone is not enough. If you have not paid in advance, a limited number of walk-in seats will be available on the day of the workshop, on a first-come-first-serve basis.  Once you’ve paid, there are no refunds.
